Dr. October (Meg) Krausch (they/them) is a public sociologist, which means that I’m a freelance scholar committed to using my training as a social scientist in the service of justice. I study inequalities and social movements, and I am especially interested in how grassroots communities develop ways to resist their oppression.

I have a PhD in Sociology from the University of Minnesota and a BA in International Studies from the University of Chicago (CV). I spent a decade studying social movements and educational projects in Argentina, including teaching for a year in an alternative high school run on consensus-based decision-making. I have also conducted research projects on whiteness in the rural Midwest; on gender-based harassment in the university; on critical feminist teaching and resistance to it; and on how we define a social movement. I’ve written about the social and political context in Honduras after forming significant relationships there through my work with the Witness for Peace Solidarity Collective.

I am based in metro Detroit, and am originally from Flint, MI. I’m currently a founding member of the Detroit Peer Respite, an abolitionist and fully consensual model for supporting people in mental health crisis, and a facilitator of the Abolitionist Book Club, and reading group with people inside and outside of prison.

I have been involved in diverse community movements including anti-eviction struggles, prison abolition, free schools, independent media, and immigrant community spaces. I am a queer intersectional feminist, an anarchist, and a white antiracist. I speak English and Spanish fluently. I have taught in many contexts including the university, as well as facilitated many meetings, and I bring all of these values and experiences to my teaching, workshop design, research, and facilitation as well.
